to be in a nars box

november 2025

i’ve been feeling at ease knowing i have found my perfect shade of red.
nars powermatte starwoman, that matches colour n028 at the beautiful nails salon in shoreditch,
my local nail salon.

not too cherry, not too bright. i really like red, and red nails, and red lipstick, and it’s always a safe 30-day option
for nails.

there was something going on last year online about the red nail theory, but there was something even
more interesting i read at the ica this year. fascist yoga is this book i used to see every day at work. i haven’t read it, but it goes on about the new order in wellness, and i feel the beauty industry rarely offers anything
that is purely benign.

think of the whole clean girl aesthetic and of how dangerous it can be. somehow i relate this with the red nail theory. beauty for gaze…?

both the clean girl aesthetic and the red nail theory frame beauty as strategic self-optimization within the male gaze, suggesting that femininity should be calibrated to what is most non-threatening and desirable.

i did brown in october as a way to get funky, experimental, but there’s no way i am getting that crazy again in november.
also, i painted my nails brown last january and i wrote something about it that triggered my whole work that semester.

so it’s a cycle life thing. brown nails make you think outside the box, but it’s very comfortable to be in a nars box.

you should try to leave that box
tho, just don’t do it when mercury is in retrograde.
