my hands have been smelling of egg custard, and there are other equally creamy smells around. it’s christmas, it’s awfully cold in lisbon for once, and it’s the perfect season to stay inside, bake, drink tea, and put everything on your skin. benamôr is gaining popularity in london, and you can buy it at fortnum & mason, just in time for me to share my favourite portuguese cosmetics.
nata hand cream, benamôr
my newfound obsession with benamôr, a brand i have known forever but never truly gave value to. on my quest to find bizarre smells, i might have found something that tops body paint perfume from vilhelm parfumerie, and for much cheaper. my pastel de nata hand cream, with egg custard scent notes. and right in front of it, there’s a manteigaria, for a double dose of the smell on your hands.
toothpaste, couto
it’s been on everyone’s mouth: couto. i love their small vaseline (old pharmacy chapsticks are truly the chicest), and i’ve been using it on my eyelashes whenever i commit the crime of sleeping with my waterproof mascara on. they’re best known for their toothpaste. two weeks after saying i was committing to euthymol, i realised i was missing a small-sized toothpaste — so this is perfect.

it sounds like loucura (madness), a classic soap for people who like clean smells. it’s especially nice when used with an african sponge net. amazing for the body, very hydrating.

claus porto makes my favourite soaps ever. another foody smell: lemongrass, which reminds me of chicken in the oven. this soap isn’t one i’d use in the bath, more for your hands, before adding your dessert hand cream.

magnolia cologne, ach. brito
a very fresh cologne. my favourite portuguese smells are the more childish perfumes: baby picu, lavender cologne, and this magnolia cologne by ach. brito has that feeling but with an elevated twist: jasmine with lily of the valey and musk, one of my favourite perfumes ever.
