breaking up with pantone’s 2026 color of the year and new year’s underwear
december 2025
another way i’m dealing with my discomfort around the increasingly monochromatic beauty industry, SO in tune with the political moment we’re living in, is by consciously breaking up with pantone’s 2026 color of the year: white. the return of white as a beauty ideal feels telling. no red nails (at least not every month) and definitely no white nails. jessica de fino jokes about the re-adoption of white, powdered faces straight out of the 18th century, while also pointing out the growing struggles of black-owned brands. it made me think about the shrinking foundation ranges we’re quietly starting to see again.
but above all, no white underwear for new year’s eve. we have a tradition of wearing underwear that matches a color scheme matilde reads off tiktok, where you pick a color according to your goals for the year. blue is for general luck, but there’s so much more.
red is for passion,
dark red is for elegance,
green is for hope,
yellow is for light,
blue is for loyalty,
brown is for comfort,
lilac is for intuition,
purple is for prosperity,
pink is for beauty,
light pink is for tenderness,
black is for luxury,
orange is for movement,
gold is for success.
margarida says she wants “master underwear,” open to interpretation. nena wants power, so she says black. matilde wants triple underwear.
none of us is wearing white. as for me, i want dewy skin, lots of blogging, and adventures. rose gold might be a good choice, and a very 2016 comeback.
